Just wondering if a true full size spare (225) will fit in 2.0 AWD? I have heard the space is tight, looking to swap my donut tire.

i have the full size spare , thats a 215 60 17 ,its about 2 in smaller than the 225 and it looks like there is enough room , i have some used 225's and am going to try to change it out, i cant imagine that the shorter tire is going to work very long on the awd

By doing the math it’s 1.36” smaller diameter, so .68” on the radius. In theory that isn’t much. Please keep me posted, I am looking at getting a 225/65-17 in there, hoping that not only it fits, but isn’t too close to the exhaust or anything

I was able to fit my current 245/65r17 in the spare position.
you thinka 235/70R17 would fit? 0.5” bigger diameter than the 245/65/r17 but 0.3” less width.

thank you!

I couldn’t say with certainty. Since my post you replied to, I’ve moved up to 245/70 (30.5”) and they do not fit in the spare location. 235/70 (30”) might fit but might not, I’m not positive.

interesting, ok you moved up a full 1” in diameter. 235/70R17 could be close then.

245 65 17 is the biggest you can go to fit under the truck as a spare on the factory wheel.

I just fit a true full size 225/65-17 on mine and wanted to add some pics and some tips for anyone wanting to upgrade from the stupid donut spare. Even the optional "full size" spare has limitations if you read the owner's manual.

When cranking the spare into place make sure it's not swinging or it might get caught on the front stopper which will push the tire towards the bumper and contact the hitch (if equipped). The tire should end up level.

Here's a few pics showing my mad MS Paint skills.

IMO the donut spare can be dangerous in a few situations like when you have a heavy load, are towing or you're in bad weather. I always seem to get a flat when I'm up in the mountains so having a true full size spare is one less thing to worry about.

Seriously, look at this pathetic spare:
