I am not having any luck finding this in the forums so here goes.

Within the first 10 minutes or so of driving after a cold start, when the car is not ice cold but not up to temp, I hear this strange noise. It goes away eventfully. Sound is coming from I believe the engine compartment.

I just bought this recently, 750 miles on the ruck. It only happens when the engine is running and it will stop when it goes in to full EV mode as you can hear from the attached video. Crank up your volume and thanks for your help!

PS. forgive the poor video, I reduced the image quality a lot to make the file smaller

Hi there, welcome to the forum. Is the sound accompanied by slight lurching like the truck wants to move forward? Can you feel any vibrations in the brake pedal? I think you might be experiencing the issue described in these threads:
I'm experiencing this issue and it appears to be somewhat common. I've taken the truck to the dealer twice but they "can't find the issue". Requested a buyback from Ford but they said I need to take it to dealership again. I consider it a safety issue as the vehicle moves forward slightly, and any grinding noises aren't usually great for longevity of the grinding parts.

Feel free to file an NHTSA complaint and maybe Ford will eventually issue a TSB or recall. Most owners seem to be okay with just living with it but seems like an issue that should be addressed...

The more pressing question is how did OP procure a 24 XL or XLT?!

Definitely something I would take into the dealership to document at the very least.

Thank you for reply, no vibration or lurching or any trans/brake issues that I can tell, who knows though. I may trying putting it in neutral when this happens to test this, but not sure if that will kill the engine and put it in EV mode or not.

Good idea, I will send them the video as well. As far as being able to procure this, I have no idea. We have 3-4 Ford dealers near me and this one had four 2024's new, All brand new, no miles on them so they were not loaners, demos, etc. They had 2 hybrids (1 XL and 1 XLT) and 2 non (both XLT I think) 1 FWD and 1 AWD. After I bought mine, they were pretty much all gone so I got really lucky.

Dealers should not be able to sell the 2024 XL and XLTs due to the back up camera, but maybe your dealer got fed up with holding their 2024s and said screw it!

Regardless, congrats to you!!

Good point, I was not very clear on when I bought it. I bought it on 11/29 and my dealership got the stop sell notice on 11/30. Ford corporate asked them to send out a mobile mechanic the following Monday to do the fix in order to avoid any type of liability but corporates 1st fix failed so they had to cancel and apparently have not figured it out yet. In terms of the other 3 that were there, not sure if they sold them or just pulled them from their website. Interesting, the recall date according to NHTSA is Sept 14th. I wonder if the dealership new about this earlier. They called me the next day and said they just got the call from corporate.

All I can say is I have never heard that in mine.

Regarding "neutral":

If you are standing still and shift to N it keeps the engine running, if running, and prevents the engine from starting if not running. So it's a form of "hold this condition".

If you are rolling more than 6 mph there is no hold.

Also there is no "gear shift" in the "N" position. Nothing mechanical happens. It is just "simulated neutral" which tells the computer, apply no power, apply no regeneration.

N won't kill the ICE. But if the HV battery is not being charged and not needing to be brought up to operating temp range, and if the HVAC system is completely turned OFF, that may allow the ICE to shut off.

Please check out the poll - trying to get a better idea on how many are impacted.

https://www.mavericktruckclub.com/forum/threads/poll-hybrid-transmission-grinding-lurching.61353/
Okay, I think you are on to something here. I do not use auto hold but the 1st stop light or two it does this noise with the engine running and cold. I do not press the brake very hard and I did notice a very tiny feeling of lurching, almost undetectable. As soon as I took my foot off the brake, it stopped until the next light. Weirdly, when it does this, It also appears to auto hold without auto-hold on so I think the computer is getting confused. I am going to trouble shoot a bit more tomorrow and see if I can get a baseline on when it does and does not do this. Taking this poll now.

I get this noise and can actually feel it while on the break pedal on my 2025 AWD Lariat Hybrid. From what I read its hit or miss if you have the issue but its still considered "normal"? I have not experienced where it actually holds it in place though like you are saying.

If I lightly hold the brakes, I get some groaning from my '25 too (and every automatic car I've owned). But it's due to the car very slightly rolling forwards, and the sound is from the brake pads on the rotors (basically, pads brake free and Mav moves, then Mav stops, rinse and repeat). I can make all my automatic cars if I hold the brakes light enough that the car moves a bit ... and it's it due to the difference between static friction & kinetic fraction that makes the brakes stick, then break free, stick, then break free ... causing a groaning noise.

I noticed on my Mav, this action is quieter and a lower pitch than my Sienna and my Prius V were.

The groaning/lurching is a separate issue from normal brake creaking. The groaning/lurching in OP's video happens in my vehicle even when the brake is pressed very hard, when the truck is in neutral, and when auto-hold is applied.
