I have driven for 50 years in the upper Midwest and know snow. My dad was sheriff and taught us (me and 5 siblings) how to drive (after driver's education courses had run their "Course") in the snow. He would take us to a large parking lot (K-Mart, Walmart etc) where we learned how to drift, do 180, 90 and 360 degree turns. WE NEVER DROVE IN THE WINTER WITHOUT snow tires! I have always had a dedicated set of 5-spoke rims with REAL snow tires, not the AT, not AS, not MS, ohh hell no. Those are not SNOW tires. Unfortunately, our state does not allow studded snow tires (way more fun but quite destructive). These are miracle workers in... you guessed it, the snow! Rant over.

I bought a set of Nokian R5 winters & rims on my hybrid and the vehicle handled very well in light to medium snow and ice. Only had one situation where I got close to stuck on a hill with fresh snow and ice underneath. Rolled it back a few ft then it just bit and plowed through. I'm very happy with how it performed, just remember to put the selector into the snow mode
