So I assume this week is my last chance at getting a build date and September delivery for my base hybrid xl with only a drop in bedliner before my current pick up needs to be inspected by September 30. My guess is something will fail and I really do not want to pour money into it for a few weeks or couple months. So my question is, will a dealer take a trade in that is a month or two past the inspection sticker expiration date ?

The only thing they check in NJ is emissions. If your CEL is not on you should be good to go. The only thing else that may fail it would be a bad exhaust.

Bob, what about tires, alignment, brakes, lights, etc. Did they stop doing that recently ?

Dealers are taking stuff that most of us would consider scrap at this point, for some of them it's worth fixing them. Oil leaks, they'll take it. Bad tires, they'll take it. Exhaust leak? They'll likely take it, as long as it's not 20+ years old.

The price will be "adjusted" but they'll take it.

Yes! In Texas I once used some cell phone pics to get their offer and made the deal. Also had video with sound and with it running. Probably didn't get max value but was happy. Dealer sent recovery truck out and picked it up 3-4 weeks later. 🥰🥰

CarMax took my sonata with an expired inspection, bald tires, and empty tank.

They'll take it. But they will adjust the price on it. Just like you would if you were on the other side of the table.

They will take anything because there are dealers all over the country looking for a fixer up to sell. All our car lots are empty and begging for people to sell their cars and trucks to them.

NJ Pinelands it's been years. I know people with severely cracked windshields rust buckets that passed. They don' do the brake test or headlight alignment. All the do is take a video of under your car to make sure you didn't mess with the cat. Plug it into the obd port and that's it. A big waste. The Feds make em do it. I know in some states they don't even have inspection. My Dad had a 67 wildcat convertible that the jerk at inspection failed it cause the back window did not say it was safety glass. My Dad was pissed as if I did something wrong. I thew the ticket away and went to another station. You can't get away with that now as they scan the vin. Also have a 69z/28 that they thought was to loud. I have a stock exhaust. After some cajoling they passed me. Also had a Kawasaki 2 stroke bike. They failed ne cause it smoked to much. I had to take it to a dealer get a letter saying it was normal. Glad that BS is gone.
