My phone wasn't set to auto connect, but it does anyway 😀

Perhaps you are connecting through Bluetooth and not wifi then.

As I understand it. Android auto uses Bluetooth to handle phone calls and maybe and texts (140 characters). Other data is handled through Wi-Fi. So turn off auto connect Bluetooth or on allow ONE Bluetooth connection at a time (in settings).

I believe it has to do with the wireless app Protection. When I turned this off, the phone stops automatically connecting to the WI-Fi, but as a result you cannot use Android Auto. Unless you're using a usb cord. Or you can leave the app protection on and connect with a usb cord and the wi-fi will stop connecting automatically.
