Perhaps you are connecting through Bluetooth and not wifi then.My phone wasn't set to auto connect, but it does anyway

As I understand it. Android auto uses Bluetooth to handle phone calls and maybe and texts (140 characters). Other data is handled through Wi-Fi. So turn off auto connect Bluetooth or on allow ONE Bluetooth connection at a time (in settings).
