why do the rear speakers sound so tinny

There is definitely high-pass filtering programmed into the system that can be removed.

Unfortunately they are small, cheap speakers mounted with zero enclosure, so there is just not that much potential there, even with replacing the speakers outright.

They have aggressive high pass filters. They can be disabled in FORScan, you can set the rears to Speaker and tweeter instead of Tweeter Only. This will lower the the high pass. I would only do this if you replace the rear speakers.
