Exactly. And then after it's set up, use your ears to determine if you're overextending or clipping. A person should know when they hear something wrong or harsh. Turn the volume knob down quickly when you hear that.

Also, you folks talking about volume 12 to 5 being loud enough, I assume you never go to a concert. People that upgrade their audio are the same people that enjoy live music.
You're right. I don't go to concerts because it kills my ears! I mean seriously painfully. It's not worth going to me.

For freeway driving I typically am comfortable at 13-15
At 20 mine gets really loud
I don’t think I’ve dared to go over 22
I’m more afraid parts are going to rattle off at those levels

My daughter is fine listening at 9/10 as she is young and hasn’t damaged her ears yet
I say yet because she puts together playlists with bass heavy music
In a year when she starts driving her Jeep (legally) I’m sure that 15” sub will be putting in work

If I am using the radio I have it up to 20. Android auto I have it up to 30. Streaming from you phone needs more volume.

I never listen to the radio and it's pretty infrequent that I listen at 30, but it does happen. 15-20 is more common if I'm alone or with my son. and...

My son is 16 and he is getting by with a MTX terminator 8" powered sub under the driver's seat in his suv. He has a few classmates with relatively big systems and I am sure he would enjoy that if I let him, but playing loud subs is pretty distracting. I know, I've done it (yikes) well more than 20 years. I don't think he would be responsible with a real sub, as it is I get in and the volume is at 35-37 out of 40. LOL

She doesn’t like it nearly as loud as I do
It’s just the full sound that she likes
Turning 15 next week and she’s already a better driver than all the girls in the family (and better than her brother)
Plus she’s mostly building the box for her Jeep (took woodshop last year)

The volume at any given speed is also highly dependent on other settings in the radio.

I personally do not like the automatic volume adjustment, so I have it disabled. That means I have to turn it higher when I go faster. I also have it faded forward significantly to reduce the rear speakers and I have it set to driver instead of all passengers. Bass/Mid/Treble settings also affect it. I believe in subtracting to make the sound correct rather than boosting a signal. Mine has negative adjustment in midrange and treble instead of boosting bass.
