My guess is that's the shield to protect the adaptive cruise control hardware (radar sensor or whatever).

Edit to add: now that you noticed it on the Mav, for sure you will start noticing it on a lot of newer cars. Some manufacturers do a pretty good job of hiding it behind the front emblem. Others not so much (looking at you, prior model year g70...)

That is definitely the radar for ACC.
