The filter is designed to protect your evaporator from debris which will eventually cause it to rust (and smell). If you don't keep your vehicles more than five years or so it won't make a ton of difference. You'll start to get smells after that and after ~10 or so units will start to corrode and fail, leaking the refrigerant and disabling the a/c.Near same age and wonder also. But I also drive with a window down for most of the time. The fan motor seems an odd excuse the filters I have changed are after the filter removing the filter lessens the back pressure on the fan. Sensitive noses seem logical mine is not. I started to replace the filter in my F150 and realized it does me no good so I left it out. Let the air flow!
