Back in Aug/Sept I started notice a funk in my truck when I would get in it in the mornings. I keep the interior of my truck pretty clean without junk/shoes/socks in it so I wasn't too sure what it could be, but having had water-ingress problems with previous vehicles, I had my suspicions. So after a few days of good rain, I started looking through my interior and found the following:

Took it to the dealership, the isolated & were able to reproduce the probem - it ended up being some sort of seal around the sliding rear window. Shockingly the part was availble, overnighted & they had me on my way the next day.

Things were great until now, when I started to notice the smell again and decided to look behind the rear seat & found the same thing:

Not happy.

Dropped it off at the dealership this morning, and this time - they could not reproduce the problem. They said they had worked on it for 5 hours, had sprinklers & hoses all over it, even ran it through the carwash multiple times in a row, and couldn't get it to leak.

(the car wash thing is another gripe as my truck is Alto Blue & this dealership doesn't have touchless car wash and my service ticket says "do not wash" on it)

My service advisor is telling me he's not sure what else they can do, and reitereated that they worked on it for 5 hours. I told him I can appreciate that, but this problem clearly still exists and I emailed him the "November water leak" pics that I took on Nov. 4th and haven't heard back from that email. I feel like they haven't found the problem in 5 hours, then they should just keep looking vs throwing up their hands & being like "welp, can't find the leak, not our problem."

I've been googling to see if anyone else has had this specific issue and didn't find anything that was exactly the same.

I did find this comment from another user here:

I have pinpointed a leak like that it other vehicles by turning the blower motor all the way to high. And, just spraying some soapy water in the area for detection. Oh, yeah....... and leave the windows up with the doors shut. heheheh... smily face etc....
So I may suggest that to my service advisor tomorrow.

@Ford Motor Company any help?

Have you tried having someone run a hose over the outside of the cab while you look at the back wall for leaks? It looks like it's comming from that seal but hard to see the all water drops in the pic. Try running a hose over the roof so it rolls down the over window and the back wall. You should try every angle you can think of all at varying pressure.
Just another thought, have you tried blowing out the rain gutters in the roof channel? Have had several vehicles that had debri clog the holes causing water issues. They just needed blown out.

There's water drops on both driver & passenger sides of that rear firewall.

I haven't done an ounce of trouble shooting besides verifying there's water inside my truck that doesn't belong That's why I bought a brand new truck with a warranty.

I'd rather spend time with my family or do other things I enjoy vs screwing around with this for however many hours.

We'd all rather be doing somethg else but you can be reactionary or proactive in this instance. If they can't find it and your not willing to help yourself out no sense complaing about it.

Never said I was unwilling to do the work. Ive had entire dashboards out on previous out of warranty vehicles to track down the source of water ingress.

My point is, I shouldn't have to do that in a vehicle with a warranty.

The MOST obvious place in the center high mounted brake light. Every truck I’ve owned with one in the last 20 years has leaked. When I watched a video removing a light to replace bulbs I was disappointed to see that the design had not been improved since my 1995 truck. There needs to be a recess in the sheet metal to house the gasket and lens. I can’t check your truck but would be highly suspect. You might check the tightness of the mount screws. Also some trucks use rubber or plastic washers under the heads ocbghd mount screws to seal the screws. I’ve had water from the cab brake light run all the way to the firewall on other trucks.

I think the dealer’s 5 hours was a good faith effort (albeit likely exaggerated), and now the ball is in your court. If you can’t be bothered to find the leak, then get an air freshener and live with it.

Air hose or something fairly loud (phone playing music?) placed near that sliding rear window (noise on outside - you, or partner listener on the inside with the sliding window closed) may point you to where the leak is. The seal around my sliding rear window looks suspicious since new, and I haven’t yet gone looking for water. But since it’s raining today - and seeing this post - I just may go looking.

After a recent rain I noticed a ton of water inside the back of my 2022 Maverick Lariat. The back rest and seat were soaked. I had a book on the seat and it was also very wet. Although I purchased the sliding window I was worried about this type of issue.

I dropped the truck off yesterday and they found a problem in the back but did not reveal the cause to me. They have to keep it for five days to complete all of the service ie the recall, the leak, rattles, tonneau issues etc.

Also, I chose the hard roll-up Tonneau Cover and it was cut too short by approximately 5/8ā€. When I picked it up in January 2022 my salesman noticed it immediately. He said ā€˜it’s a MINOR adjustment’. The problem now arises because he did NOT file a claim. It has to be filed within 90 days of delivery. I took the truck back but they couldn’t fix it. All the service manager could say was ā€˜these covers are not supposed to be waterproof’. I now have water pouring into the back of my truck bed.

The photo on Ford’s website shows a completely covered Tonneau where it meets the tailgate. This is why I chose this model. In addition, the Tonneau is buckling near the tailgate on one side.

I called Ford’s Corporate office and since my dealer is an independent, all they can do is take a complaint about the dealership. They are willing to contact the dealer about the complaint but I have to deal directly with them.

I am open to suggestions. Thanks all!

I recently noticed a large amount of water inside my 2022 Lariat. The back sliding window, the back seat, and everything else inside was soaked all the way to the front windshield. I had a book on the back seat and even it was soaked.

The Lariat is in the Ford dealership now torn down (their words). This issue could have been going on since I took delivery. I always thought it was just condensation. It only has 1294 miles on it and because I don’t drive often I didn’t know it was happening.

I just spoke with a mold specialist who does not work on vehicles so there’s no conflict of interest with his advice. He said it is ā€œimpossibleā€ to remediate mold in a vehicle after a large event. You would have to tear it down to the frame. Spores develop within 24 hours of the exposure which is very dangerous and can compromise the health of those exposed.

I have been reading more posts about this problem. Not sure what recourse is available to any of us who are experiencing this problem. ??
