Seems to me that even a "cheap" truck should have a real bumper. Do the other unibody trucks have plastic bumpers? Might explain severe damage when hit. FYI, a shopping cart caused about $2500 in damages to my Mazda CX-5 which has a plastic bumper.

pretty much unless the vehicle has a solid metal bumper, its going to be plastic over some structural member. aside from trucks, most other vehicle types are made this way. Maverick included I think.

If you are ever in an accident, you'll be glad the bumper is plastic, much better for reducing impact energy to the people inside.
Good point. Plastic is great in a major accident; but not so good in minor scrapes. Without costing a fortune is there no way to have both? I guess not in a low cost vehicle.
