That was my point. My original post was kind of harsh, but having experienced a Maverick I just can't wrap my mind around it. For what it is and what it cost at MSRP, it is absolutely fantastic. For what must have been in the mid $30k range for a used $23k truck, it's just too absurd to fathom - for me. I didn't accumulate what wealth I do have by making terrible financial decisions. Buying a new car at all is bad enough from a financial standpoint most of the time, and overpaying by such a significant margin on what is supposed to be a value item is truly a terrible decision. But it isn't my money, so there's that.

I wish the OP the best. I just know I will never be desperate enough to overpay by that margin on any item larger or small.
I appreciate you rethinking your comment a little bit. It wasn't a terrible financial decision for me, nor one made in desperation. I am 68 now, I might have 20 more years to do the things I enjoy - driving the car I like (owned a Corvette for the past 19 years), traveling, eating out, buying golf equipment, etc. Spending $10K more than I had to was not a big deal to me versus missing out on driving it over the next year. As I mentioned in one of my other comments, it is similar to deciding whether to take social security at 62, 66 or 70. We don't know the future. I have worked hard since I was 13, it is time to enjoy the "fruits of my labor." You do you and I will do me.

I guess there is no real alternative to the Maverick; if that is what they want and they can't wait, kinda have to pay the price. I am with you, at the $30k+ pricepoint, Maverick wasn't even something we would have considered.

I am 68 years old too. My old friends are dropping like flies. Twenty more years maybe overly optimistic.

There is nothing wrong with being optimistic!!!

For years, my parents drove 5-7 year old generic sedans and station wagons, purchased with 60-75K miles, and sold when they hit around 100K miles. They professed to not caring about what type of car they drove, as long as it was reliable and cheap. At that age, the cars had already suffered most of the depreciation losses, and maintenance costs were still quite manageable. Instead of dealing with car payments, they set money aside each month as though they were making a payment on an "average" new car, so there was always a repair fund, and sufficient cash in that account to buy a "new" used car when it was time to do so.

As a kid, I hated being the one whose parents were driving the 6-year-old Plymouth Fury when other kid's parents drove new Barracudas or Torinos. Later in life, I realized my parents were sacrificing what they wanted so they could feed a family of six on the limited salaries they earned as pastor and schoolteacher.

Years later, I remember the joy on my father's face when I got him a new riding lawnmower for his birthday. It was the first new lawnmower he'd ever owned – definitely the only riding mower! You'd have thought it was a Lamborghini... A few years later, he bought himself a 2-year-old off-lease Lexus sedan. You'd have thought he'd died and gone to heaven!

So all that was really to say "I understand being frugal when it's necessary." My family of three made it through my college years on two part-time jobs, while mostly paying for school ourselves. I did earn a few smaller scholarships, but money was tight enough that our weekly "treat" was splitting a single hamburger, fries, and chocolate milkshake .

I've worked hard all my life, and saved / invested enough to have a comfortable retirement. If my wife and I choose to spend OUR money to buy something WE decide is worth the price, what business is it of anyone else's? Frankly, I'd much prefer to own a maxed-out Maverick Hybrid Lariat with all the bells and whistles than to own an identically-equipped F-150 - even if they cost the same amount of money. Do I absolutely need a new truck? No, I don't. But I do want a truck, and I prefer to buy new versus used at this stage in my life. I really like the looks of the Maverick. It gets great mileage, fits in my garage, AND fits well within my budget. So I've ordered two - one for me, and one for my wife. (We both love trucks.) Whether or not that's a "terrible financial decision" is OUR decision to make. You may not choose to make the same decision. I might choose not to pay $10K over MSRP to get a truck NOW, but I might well be willing to pay "something" over MSRP to bypass the waiting line, if the right truck came along. But either way, that decision is up to each individual buyer, not to some self-proclaimed "arbiter" of what's a good financial decision...
