usb does not recognize flash drive

I have all but given up on the usb being recognized with any reliability
And I will cancel my appointment with the dealer to look into it
What could they find that I have not already dug into??
I will put my music on my phone and play via an app call AIMP (its great) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aimp.player&hl=en_US&gl=US

I feel your pain. I had to end up with a workaround as well:

My USB doesn't get read immediately and often it reverted to XM radio, which was an annoyance. I just got in the habit of turning the head unit off with the power button before shutting down. When I get back in, by the time I'm strapped in with nav running, I'm ready to go and hit the power on button once I start rolling. Works for me!
