So experienced rodent damage to my much loved Maverick. Two wiring harnesses have to be replaced. It’s been in the shop since mid January and still waiting for one wiring harness. It’s so frustrating. And yes I used peppermint oil and Irish spring as a preventative……the rodents in this area think it’s delicious! I do have a new plan WHEN I get my truck back. In the meantime I am frustrated and my busy time of the year is just 3weeks away.

To mangle the old Nissan ad: "Rodents love trucks."

I had one chew through my old Ranger's carbon spark plug wires. That was only $50. Another crawled into the HVAC vents and died deep inside - that was a $1,500 to remove and reinstall the dash. And then there was the mouse nest inside the air filter. Yes, inside the air filter. We were away for a month and left the Ranger parked outside.

I then declared war on rodents and went on rodent trapping mission. They love peanut butter. Over the space of six months, I trapped 100+ mice. And we had cats. Very. Lazy. Cats.

Honda/Acura sells a pepper tape you can buy and give to dealer, ask if they would wrap the harness for you as a preventative measure?

We had issues with squirrels getting under the hood of our vehicles and chewing the wiring, building nests. Our mechanic advised we should get realistic looking rubber snakes and tie wrap them somewhere secure under the hood (I strapped one across the top of the battery). You have to be careful it won't come loose and get wrapped around something or caught in the fan. We have never seen squirrel damage since we did this.

We had this issue with my daughter's 2003 Toyota Matrix. Mice in the air filter, cabin air filter and even a dead mouse with a bunch of debris in the heater/AC fan. I also had issues with our 2000 Accord. I used cotton balls in plastic bags with peppermint oil and also put some traps in the engine compartment, interior and trunk. I caught quite a few. I may have to try those rubber snakes too.

My Honda had the same issue. An auxilliary wiring harness and the wiper fluid hoses had to be replaced. I had to put peppermint spray in the engine compartment and have had no issues since.

My son -in-law had a wiring harness chewed. He then installed an electrical ultrasonic animal Repeller, with a strobe light. He bought it on Amazon. He hasn't had a rodent problem since.
