I have a 2025 Maverick Tremor. I know it has the two clutch packs in the rear axle but does it also have a third one up by the PTU or is that just redundant?

The purpose of the clutch pack in the front PTU is to prevent the transaxle from spinning the rear drive shaft and the rear differential when operating in FWD mode. The frictional losses would eat about 2-3 mpg of fuel efficiency without it.

The purpose of the clutch pack in the single clutch rear RDU, like in the FX4 models, is to prevent the rear axles from spinning the rear differential when driving in FWD mode. When the clutch is disengaged, the ring gear, the carrier, the pinion gear and the drive shaft come to a stop. Only the rear axles are spinning and nothing else.

The only way get the drive shaft and rear differential to stop spinning and to improve your mpg is to have a clutch at both ends of it.

The second clutch of the Spicer twin-clutch RDU in the Tremor operates the electronically locking differential.
