I cannot seem to get a straight answer out of Google. I have a 25 Maverick Tremor. Does it have just the two clutch packs in the rear axle or is there a third clutch pack up by the PTU? At the rear, is it just a ring and pinion gear sending the power to each of the clutch packs or is it mechanically a lot like a normal differential with the ring, pinion, and then all the little planetary gears between? Can somebody link me to some Ford documentation on how this specific rear drive axle works?

dual-clutch, locking rear differential:

And yes there are 3 clutch packs. The first is in the front transaxle PTU. That determines whether it is going to send power to the rear, or not.

The second clutch in the standard RDU disconnects the axles from differential carrier. If this wasn’t present, the rotation of the rear tires would ALWAYS drive the axles, thereby driving the gear carrier, the spider gears, the ring gear, the pinion gear, the u-joints and the drive shaft. By stopping this rotation and reverting to pure FWP operation, it saves about 3 mpg. The only remaining inefficiency is that the rear axles are still rotating. In theory, the differential carrier and rear driveshaft will come to a stop.

The third clutch in the “advanced AWD” RDU locks the left and right axles together to prevent the spider gears from rotating and preventing the usual speed differential between the rear tires.
