I had the baby tire and for some reason the blue hard plastic piece would not spread and easily come off over the cable(s)! I saw videos showing it happening easy but mine would not come off over the cables like they showed. I was taking it off to get my Mav undercoated/rust protected at Ziebart. I prefer keeping it in the bed anyway so I removed the whole mechanism. That way if my wife (74) is driving and someone has to help her change a tire if I can't get there it is easy to get to and no one has to get down on the ground to get it out.

Doesn't look like the blue piece is needed. Probably on their for sound mitigation.
