The basics are a Leatherman, duct tape, tow rope, small air compressor, tire plugs, gloves and one of these:

You can build up from there. If you have reception and friends, a phone replaces a lot of tools.

And remember tow straps and ropes are meant for gentle pulls. They do not stretch like the fancy kinetic ropes you see on YouTube. If you hit the end of a strap at 20 mph, whatever it is attached to is going to break or bend and its probably not the Class 17 receiver hitch on the F-350 at the other end. And no straps with hooks. And don't attach to tow balls. Pull the hitch and anchor the strap with the hitch pin.

Buy a tractor jack. Anything you can do with a whinch can be done with one of them. If at all possible use your trailer hitch as the lashing point. My dad used his for everything from pulling stumps to stretching fences.
It would be a good idea to find a lashing point on the front. That would end up in the front bumper being removed though.
I have one ;)

Just don't usually carry it anymore. Totally forgot about it actually. Thank you for making that point. My manual labor bone is broken now days though lol.

This is great, thanks! I never considered a come a long. What weight is recommended? just be safe and get 5 ton?
The 2.5 of 3 ton ones is enough. You probably won't be getting a Maverick so far into a jam that you need a big one. There is a more expensive style called something like a "more power puller" but it is a bit bulkier. Also if you get a snatch block or one that has a built-in snatch block it doubles your power at the cost of speed. But it works.

I have one in my Comanche and use it all the time. It's also 30 years old lol. Doesn't do a ton of good as a jack on a Maverick though. Sure you can use the hitch but it's not a good feeling when it tips sideways.

That is a good looking hilift mount setup. There is an adapter lets you connect a high lift to the spokes of a wheel and lift the tire off the ground. Then you can put rocks under the tire, this would be useful if you are high centered or your wheel was in a hole.

Your original question was “basics”. This is what I carry in my maverick for off-roading. I try to keep everything locked inside of the car, so I do keep it down to basics. I did forget flashlight…. Every car should have one.

Back in my Jeep days, I also mounted / carried an off-road jack, offroad bumpers with front and rear D rings, front bumper mount winch, spare synthetic winch line, light bar, Jerry can of gasoline, 5 ton come along, snatch block, tree saver, short chain with end hooks, tow straps, extra d-rings, full size axe, hand saw, hunting knife, basic tool box with sockets, ratchet, channel locks, screw drivers, etc, valve stem core remover to air down quicker, CB radio, EPIRB, first aid kit, emergency rations, emergency water. Mylar tent, “don’t die in the woods” emergency sleeping bag, tinder and striker for starting fires, tire repair kit, roll bar mounted fire extinguisher, LED headlamp, 100 ft paracord, 12v jump box and probably a dozen other things I’m just not thinking of off the top of my head. Most of that gear got packed into an XL rolling duffle bag that went in the rear cargo bay and could be easily rolled into the house to re-organize and re-pack.
