What is the best way to mount a rear dash cam outside of the truck near the trailer hitch ? I’m trying to figure out how to best route the cable from inside of the truck to outside of the truck. Thanks

Run cabling from front to back under the door trim (remove the bottom trim panels in both door openings, and pull away the B-pillar panel). You'll have pretty good access for routing a cable. I went the same route for my brake controller wiring.

At the bottom of the back wall of the cabin there is a large rubber grommet used as a factory wiring exit for going beneath and to the back of the truck. I ran my new wiring through there and routed basically in parallel to the factory wiring all the way back. You'll find one of these big grommets on each side of the cab, I used the driver side one.

I'd recommend using mesh braided cable sleeving around any cables for protection, really everywhere but for sure for wiring underneath the truck, and using lots of zip ties to ensure a long term reliable and clean installation.

I’m not able to check right now. When I looked earlier today I saw two larger grommets behind the back seat. Maybe 4x2 inches in size. One on each side. I’ll check it out tomorrow when I get back to the truck. Thanks

Do not put the camera outside. Put it in the rear window. Is your rear camera IP64 at minimum? And where would you mount it that it would not be seen and stay out of the elements?

I installed the rear dash cam on top of the trailer hitch. I ran the cables like you said. Through the grommet behind the rear seat. Worked out great. The view from the camera is just right. Thanks for your help.

I didn’t want the camera inside. Tinted rear window, sliding rear window and didn’t want a camera stuck on the window. Cameras have been installed outside for years.

Camera's rated to be installed outside... yes.
