I have an AWD Maverick w/FX4 package on reservation but recently purchased a place in Outer Banks, NC. I now need something that can handle beach driving. Everywhere I search says to only use 4WD, not AWD, on the beaches there because of the soft sand and deep ruts around the ramps. Can anyone give me a review of Sand Mode? I'm wondering what this actually does. I read that it'll keep it in lower gears for longer but I don't know if this is actually going to be similar to a true 4WD in sand. I'm currently looking for an F150 or Tacoma, but they're both just so expensive. I'd love to keep my reservation but don't want to be getting stuck when we're bringing people out on the beach.

Been driving AWD on sand for years. I live at the shore. The different drive modes may help to get you out of trouble. But the best thing you can always do is pay attention and try not to get your self into trouble. Tire selection makes a big difference. My MAXXIS RAZR AT's do very well in the sand.

Now if you want to go PLAY in the sand, get yourself a lifted rig with lockers. And a winch. And go have fun!

I watched all of the testing videos on off roading I could find for the Maverick. You would be surprised at what this truck can do in the sand. Sand mode apparently keeps the wheels spinning and lets the computer apply drive to those wheels with the most traction. I haven't been to the beach yet, but it looks to me like the Mav will handle loose soft sand. I'm talking about with the FX4 package. I also have the 4K towing.
