In the 70's the USFS used Ford LTD's with all terrain tires on the back and skid plates installed up front. Never saw one stuck. Forest service and logging roads were pretty gnarly. Sometimes just little more than a goat trail.

My first car was a 71 Torino with a 6 cylinder and 3 on the tree. I put JC Penney mud grips on all 4 tires and used it deer hunting on logging roads in northern Michigan.
