Pretend whatever you want to, but the word means what the word means, and if you want a Ford Maverick emblem, it was designed decades ago.
Not new information.
It's not a matter of pretending, as words change meaning over time.
Awful many years ago meant full of awe. Now it doesn't.

While a maverick was originally coined to refer to an unbranded range animal, especially a calf that has become separated from its mother, its currently used definition refers to a person who shows independence of thought and action, especially by refusing to adhere to the policies of a group to which he or she belongs.

I think Ford was thinking this latter definition applies to its vehicle, and it's just slightly more likely that the Top Gun Tom Cruise character did not adopt the call sign Maverick because he wanted people to think of him as a quadrupedal bovine herbivore. ;)

You are right that what you noted were Ford Maverick emblems, but does it fit?
Back in the day when mavericks were cows maybe it did.

If Volvo introduced a “Maverick” model in 2020 - it’s independent thinking customer base would think “why did they name it after a cow”?

Absolutely the Maverick emblem fits. Especially, on a truck like vehicle, far better than it did on on the two door economy car that it was originally assigned to.
Don't forget the marketing tie in with the price.
Originally our Mavericks were going to be introduced in 2020. Coinciding with the 50-year anniversary of the original Maverick COVID put a two-year delay on that. They even had a price tie in
$1,995 in 1970. $19,995 in "2020" (2022)

Our Mavericks were originally to be introduced 2020 coinciding with the 50-year anniversary of the original Maverick covid put a two-year delay on that.
Also, the original Maverick was designed in the late 1960’s - the high water mark for independent thinking. Era of The Right Stuff!

But Maverick was cattle back then as they are today moo 🐮

YES! You are correct!

That's the "Maverick", I TOO first would think of..

BUT, it got TOO overwhelming with Everyone's fascination, the first years on this Forum.
With that "over-ego" Hollywood Movie Guy.. :cautious:

Wait, in early forum days you had to explain to some folks that their newly purchased trucks were NOT named after a movie star? Good times:)

I wonder if Ford considered all of the possible ramifications for name reuse...
If they read this thread, the advertising agency would likely call it a great success.
By comparison, I wonder how much conversation there wasn't when Chevy named the Silverado..

Naming rationale takes a back seat (that the Maverick has) to what they built, or this thread, as well as the MTC forum itself, would likely not exist... :)

According to the truck's marketing manager, Trevor Scott, said that they knew very well that this vehicles' customer was a younger customer, they're very much after a more active lifestyle, and affordability is also strong with those customers. These younger customers also don't remember (or aren't even aware) of the old compact model that was last sold in the US in 1977 (let alone the name's genesis from Samuel Maverick in 1867).

Mr. Scott apparently missed a bit on his target audience, and that audience's knowledge of Ford history. Fortunately he wasn't in charge of product development...
