I found a first-edition paperback of the novel it was based on in a used book store a couple years ago. The novel is good, but VERY different from the movie. In the novel, Stachel lives! Apparently he was in a series of books following The Blue Max.

You've probably seen it but "Cross of Iron" with James Coburn is both and outstanding movie and book as well, with the book being even better. It was the best role Coburn ever played in my opinion.
