Sorry if this is long-winded...

I have a 2023 Maverick XLT Lux, and I have mounted a Garmin 67W Dashcam on the windshield.

Keep in mind, this is NOT the Maverick Lariat Lux that I ordered (I don't expect the one I ordered until fall at the earliest) so I got this one, well, because I wanted to.

So I have a decision when the Lariat that I ordered shows up, whenever that may be. Keep this one or sell it and get the Lariat? I like this one but some of the features on the Lariat are very appealing.

So, back to my, admittedly minor, dilemma.

My goal is to have the Garmin Dashcam turn on when I start the vehicle and turn off when I shut the vehicle off. This is because we had a Garmin Dashcam in our Subaru Outback that was "on all the time" that, when we didn't use the car for several days, would draw down the battery enough that it wouldn't start. But I digress.

When I plug the Garmin into the USB-A port on the dashboard below the climate controls (see first photo) the Garmin starts when I turn on the vehicle, but never goes into "camera mode" and stays stuck on the screen shown in the second photo.

When I plug the Garmin into the cigarette lighter, it works fine, but stays on even after I shut off the vehicle. Apparently the cigarette lighter socket is "on all the time."

Which, is not the worst thing in the world, I just need to remember to shut the Garmin off when I shut off the vehicle. (As we age, memory is the second thing to "go." I forget what the first thing was...)

I use the USB-C port on the dashboard to connect my cell phone, and it works fine. When it is plugged in the main dashboard screen above the radio controls go straight to my cell phone's Waze mapping app (I have to open the cell phone first so it talks to the Maverick but that's a minor inconvenience.)

But not the Garmin. It just stays stuck on that screen below.

Suggestions?

Am I doing something wrong?

My plan, once I decide which Maverick will be the "permanent" one, is to have someone (who knows what they are doing because I don't want to get into the wiring) route the power source to a switched circuit. But I don't want to do that just yet.

So I bought a $10 cigarette lighter outlet with 2 wires from Walmart.

Under passenger floor mat (towards firewall) is the fuse panel. You just pop the plastic cover off.

I used a "micro3 tap" available for under $10 on amazon for the hot wire and I drilled a hole in a washer and soldered the ground wire to it, and put it under one of the nuts right there holding the fuse assembly to the truck. I tucked the cig outlet and plugged in dashcam power adapter into the empty space under the fuse panel.

So basically I'm not cutting any wires and it's all removable in about 5min.

I have a very similar Garmin I ran the wire up through the passenger A pillar, and I have a cheaper dashcam I ran the power wire under the door trim to the back window.

ALSO, there was a setting in Android Auto to not have to unlock the phone when plugging it in- it always recognizes the Mav and starts AA without having to unlock the screen.

That would be handy!!! I'll search around and see if I can find it. If you happen to remember, can you post a photo of the screen where it is located?

Buy the Garmin OBD2 plug and run the cord along the edge of the windshield and under the a pillar trim down the left side. Coil extra length under the dash.

This is a short and long term solution because the Garmin OBD2 plug has a switch on it to power the camera for various duration. I think it's 15 min, 12hr, constant. Constant could get cut off by deep sleep eventually, I'm not certain.

I have (4) 66w/67w’s in some of my vehicles. My Maverick has a 67w. Pick up a Garmin OBD2 power plug and it will work perfectly. Also, it is switch selectable between 10 minutes, 24 hours, or infinity after key off. I keep mine on 10 minute shutdown. They are available on Amazon etc. for $50. Never touch the camera, just get in the truck, start it, and the camera powers up and comes on. Also, I mount my camera in the upper left corner of the windshield. It’s closest to the OBD2 , easiest to get the cord to, not obstructive at all for me at 6’, and works perfectly there...

When you attach the camera to a USB power the camera is in a data mode vs just power mode. You would use the supplied USB-x cable to plug into your PC when doing a SW upgrade, etc.

Edit, Opps, I missed the post above, Garmin OBD2 power is the way to go..

Good luck
.

Yep, and if you park somewhere the unit can connect to WiFi it will automatically upload any saved videos (typically detected incidents). Works great for my 16 year old's SUV.
