Lariat FX4, averaging 28-30 MPG 80% highway, I used 14.5 gallons of 87 , range of about 410 miles commuting to DC Monday through friday

just to add on to my previous post. The weather is starting to warm up, not much but it is getting into the low 50's during the day and above 25 at night. This morning I was really impressed that my mileage is averaging 29.3. I am using no ethanol 89 octane on this tank, this is the thrid tank I have put in, at 852 miles right now. I should clarify, I have been filling up when the tank gets down but not always at empty. I have been calculating the mileage when I fill up and the MPG on the dash is within 0.3 of calculation so....
Information, the gas station I use has 87 to 110 octane non-ethanol fuel. The 110 is a seperate "Race Gas" pump and arount $7 / gallon. I don't think this 2 liter would run with that high octane but it likes the 93, 91 and 89 so far. And it seems to get the best mileage with the 89. I am going to stick with that for a while and see but if the mileage drops I will go back to the 91 and if necessary the 93

Ok I saw one thread with people getting 34+ MPG with their AWD. We picked up my Wife’s Maverick XLT AWD on December 23rd, she's put 850+ miles on it and is only getting 19.2 MPG at the moment. She's 60 % Highway (average speed 70 to 75 MPH) and she's using 87 octane. What are you all getting in realistic daily driving and what octane are you using? Thank you all in advance for your info and any recommendations you can share. Lou

Mine increased with mileage ,4500 now getting 26.5 mph. Was 19 also , I use regular but I prefer the next grade up mileage is better but more expensive.

Wow that's fantastic, she has over 3500 minded miles on hers now. I'll make sure I do another MPG check this week, she forgot to write her milage down when she got gas on Thursday. It'd be nice to see her milage get closer to your MPG. Thank you for the info.

I only run 89 or higher octane. The owner's manual recommends 91 octane for best performance,. I ran a single tank of 87 octane and I had a hard time getting out of my own way. I don't run the engine hard except when on the freeway, which is seldom as I live in a rural town and it is faster to take the state roads rather than to circle around to the freeway. But I generally have been getting between 27 and 30 mpg depending on traffic and weather.

She's up to 23.2 MPG from 19 MPG, wow just from her gas savings alone we could go to Disney World again this year (went in Feb and last December too I'd still like to see her break 25 MPG just for the Hell of it she just went over 3,500 miles since Dec 23rd.

Octane only retards pre detonation. Higher octane fuels are typically recommended for high compression or very hot running engines (like a turbo) which are are prone to pre detonation (pinging / knocking). The energy content in BTUs is the same regardless of the octane level. 91 octane has the same energy content as 87 octane. Generally, the detergent additives are also the same and most states have a min level of detergent additives required by law. That is why it is recommended to use the lowest octane recommended by the manufacturer.

IMHO it is more important that the fuel I buy come from a gas station with well maintained pumps (including filters on the pumps) and tanks that are newer and likely do not contain water. The worst time to buy gas is when a tanker is dropping a load of fuel as the underground tank will be agitated which puts any sediment or water in the tank into the fuel that is pumped.
