Just happened on this video. That is some crazy ultralight flying there. I am not ready to slow down as I've gotten older. In fact I find myself wanting to do more in the time I have left on this planet. I did my first skydive at 45. Got my scuba diving certificate at 49. Haven't tried bungee jumping ....yet. Would love to have an ultralight to fly around in. Maybe I could build myself one out of Home depot materials?, Lol. Been flying Microsoft flight sim for at least 15 years, so know all the basic flying principles and whatnot.

They sell a parachute for these so I guess you can kinda combine it with skydiving? 🤣

I first experienced hang gliding as a paratrooper in the 70s. I ate a lot of dirt crashing. Watched more than one framed glider fold up on itself and kill the pilot. Then a career in military aviation. People falling dead all around me (in peacetime) because this failed or that failed or somebody miscalculated. Aviation of any sort is unforgiving.

Ultralights are cool right up until they kill you. Because you're old and you forgot to check the tension on a fastener. Or your reflexes aren't fast enough to right the platform when that thermal hits - because you're not 25 anymore.

But I get the urge. I'm personally psyched for the coming wave of electric drones (VTOLS) that are human-scale. They're already flying. Many can self pilot. Give them another five years (and live that long), and if you have a hundred grand or so to spare, you can fly around the neighborhood and dodge shotgun blasts from angry neighbors. I can't wait. I want to go out of this world fast, not slow.

If you read Aviation Week, you can see the rapid progress in electric VTOLs. They are coming, like it or not. Pretty soon you will never be able to look up at a mostly empty sky.

Anyone remember the days last century when an airplane contrail was exciting? Because the skies were empty? (not counting 9-11).
