As for customer changes up to the time the Maverick is going down the line.....
No one here has mentioned the third party supplier. Sure, if Ford had a warehouse with a gazillion parts stocked they could make changes up to near production date.
But much of what goes into the Maverick as it goes down the assembly line is third party supplied. Meaning Walmart does not carry the raw materials to build the dash assembly, seats, drivetrain, and so on.
They need time to source raw materials, even staring with raw ores, to make the parts Ford orders. Consider that when wondering why you cannot change to an XLT from an XL a week before it goes down the line.
