"a very odd thing happen with our 2012 Hybrid Maverick"

Man, you guys are wet behind the ears with Maverick Hybrid. The battery is full, where does the energy go considering you refuse to use your foot brake down a mountain?

Don't just ride this ICE "air pump" all the way down. Do mix in some foot brake checks as well. You've got to produce brake dust in the mountains.

"Save the brakes"... and instead ride your drivetrain all the way down???
I appreciate all of the responses and it certainly sounds like everything was working as it should have been.

Yes, I have a 2022 Maverick, not a 2012. Thanks for pointing out my typing error (I do re-read my posts before posting but missed this)

The mountain road I was on in the Smoky Mountains my be different that what you are used to. This is not a long downhill highway, this is a one-lane, one-direction, narrow mountain road where there is a turn every few yards and if you are going over 10 MPH, you are probably out of control. This goes on for about 30 minutes and, yes, I was on the brakes the entire time. That was why I was wanting a little additional slowing power from the engine.

So, in doing some OBD PID monitoring, it seems that Ford chooses to have the HV battery maintain a charge of between 30 and 70%.
Is this a fair statement?!
Sure would be nice to see 85% as the upper limit…….., just sayin’. Bill P

After 72% or a little reserve say up to 80% probably needs to be Regen braking plus hydraulic plus engine braking in case it's needed for an emergency stop. As the battery gets over 80% charge the number of amps that can be put into battery and not overheat it is much reduced. Plus the capacity of the battery will be reduced some percentage every month it's in service due to age. Yes at ten years it may still be working but the capacity may be 70% of what it was new. Instead of 30-70% recharge window it may be 30-55% (or whatever is programed,).
