While waiting for our Hybrid Maverick to get scheduled we got the chance to drive a 23 Ford Escape hybrid. Since this 23 hybrid escape has the same hybrid system as the maverick we figured it would be a great opportunity to test out what driving the hybrid Maverick should be like. The drive itself was perfectly fine but a few of the noises were strange. This was the first time both of us had ever driven a hybrid. When starting out in just electric mode it was a very strange sensation and very quiet. Once accelerating though when the 2.5 kicked on the engine itself was what I would describe as pretty loud and coarse sounding. The transition of the ICE engine turning on was seamless and once up to speed the whole drive train was pretty quiet.

Wondering if Maverick hybrid owners would say the ICE engine is pretty noisy when it kicks in? Do you find this to be the case? Almost sounded like a diesel engine when it first kicked in to be honest. This wasn't just a one off thing either as it continued to do this even after it was warmed up. Honestly maybe this is the way it's supposed to sound or perhaps the sound from the ICE seems to be exaggerated as your going from very little sound when running on battery? What are current hybrid owner's thoughts on this?

Also have most of the TSB/recall issues with the hybrid been remedied for the 23MY? I would assume that the same TSB's, etc for the Maverick hybrid would also pertain to the MY23 Escape Hybrid?

A hybrid engine has what’s called Atkinson cycle valve actuation, which makes the hybrid engine sound way different than a typical ICE engine. I kind of align it with the sound a 5 cylinder engine makes, which has more growl than a 4 cylinder. There is also an exhaust diverter valve on the Ford hybrids, which is a means of extracting heat from the exhaust pipe to warm up the HV battery, and this valve likely changes the exhaust “note” when that valve is in the divert mode. I know my Maverick hybrid sounds louder and more agricultural than my 2014 Fusion hybrid does. All seems well once it warms up.

Yes, engines running the Atkinson cycle are best described as making a droning noise. I've had two hybrids, one Toyota and now the Maverick with similar displacement, they sound very similar. The more you put the peddle to the floor, the louder it drones, just the nature of the beast, since the engine is always working at the most efficient rpm for the power demanded.
