How to Save $$ Money $$ on Keys by Programming Yourself -- From a Locksmith and Owner :)

The blank was $28 so not just $5 risk.

I suppose, if you can return the blank. Had not thought about that. I need to check my blanks, but I think I also bought the same "rounded" ones. I have not tried to have them cut yet. But I will report back when I do!

I bought the 28 dollar rounded blank listed earlier in this thread. Programmed fine, works the door lock and the ignition switch. I didn't want to buy the cheaper blanks because I heard the chips are iffy. The unbranded switch blade works on my XLT no remote start.

Should have risked the $5 and tried it. I am no locksmith, but I can't imagine the rounded tip matters as much as the cut pattern. Unless somehow the rounded tip kept the key from inserting that last .01 mm into the lock cylinder.

Makes no difference with a good key machine. Strattec is a Ford factory supplier. Ive cut both keys with no problem.

Ordered two of these keys from Amazon for my Lariat with remote start and got them programmed this weekend. I had issues with getting one of them to program at first. I eventually was successful using the Redneck's original instructions (holding the button down) and doing the swaps pretty quick. There was a pop-up notification saying "Key Program Successful" after it worked.

Couple tips for anyone having issues... I put a new battery in case the one it came with was dead. It seems the chimes after you press the button last about 5 seconds and served as a timer in addition to my counting.

There has been many questions on the keys for our beloved trucks and as a locksmith I can say if you lose all your keys you will more than likely have to tow it back to the dealer until our software is updated. HOWEVER I have confirmed on board programming works if you have the original two keys ( two programmed keys ) - you can program them yourself - that has been mentioned here before. Do this NOW !!! before you loose one of the two keys LOL.

On the XL or XLT trucks you can either add a flip remote or just a standard key ( possibly you might want to add two cheaper keys as a backup ) On the Lariat only the fob will work however the emergency key is not required. I thought I would put links to which keys to purchase and you can take them to a local locksmith just to have cut - as long as you maintain two extra you are in good shape adding in the future.

Pull up felt cover - place first existing fob in depression - push start button ( without foot on brake ) ignition comes on- count to 5 - remove fob - push ignition off - put second existing fob in depression - push ignition on - count to five - remove fob - push ignition off. take new fob - put in depression push AND HOLD start button down - you should hear chirp and message - key programming successful.


All in all pretty simple procedures and a few dollars and effort now can save you hundreds later !

Not as of yet waiting for new software. Pretty sure that's going to be dealer only at this point. I haven't tried to see if forscan can do it

Dealership replaced the BCM and gave me two keys (one I gave them and one new) when I picked the truck up. Now my old key doesn't work and when I try programming, it says "no key detected". Is it possible I'm programming it wrong or did they brick the old key when they reprogrammed and there's nothing I can do?

When they replaced the BCM the keys had to be re-programmed back in. You should check with them on getting the old key put back in.

Do you have two working keys with which to program a new one? If not, the dealer should be able to fix their mistake...

I got back my key that I sent to Redneck today. Worked on the doors and was easier to activate than me opening the door.

I did the activation with the door open and used the chimes as the timer for the seconds(3 chimes,3 seconds) and did the next key fob and then the one he cut.
It may not chirp and start like the instructions but instead cycle the locks and then display the message that it was successful.

1. I bought a 2022 Ford maverick Lariat Lux



2. It did not have a spare key, but I did set up my FordPass/MyKey



3. Now the restrictions for volume and speed are locked and I can’t change them without a second key.



The dealer mentioned in passing I would need to order 2 keys additional keys (3 keys total) now to presumably set up another as administrator. Does that sound right, and programming the news keys work the same way as above?
