How to remove tailgate assist ?

Need to remove the Dee/Zee unit and I cant quite figure out how to remove the retaining clip/etc without scratching/beating the thing- Pulling didnt work...

What's the trick ? Thx

Slide small flat screw driver under clip to spread teeth holding the ball and pop off.
