How necessary is a bed liner?

I'm thinking of getting the rubber bed mat from Ford with my points. How's the thickness and does it have cut outs for the floor tie downs? At speed is it heavy enough to stay in place? Thanks in advance.

There used to be two bed mats, one with cutouts and the other without. It looks like only the cutout version is available now: NZ6Z99112A15B.

It's 1/4 inch thick. I usually have either a net over my bed, or a piece of 2x4 in the rear bed slots, just in case, so not sure about the weight issue. It is pretty heavy.
