Has anyone replaced the rear speakers with 6x9s in boxes? After reading through threads about audio upgrades...I started wondering about simply replacing the factory rear speakers with old school 2-way 6x9 speakers in boxes behind or under the rear seat? This would be a low-tech/low-budget alternative to some of the options I've read about here. It would also get the rear speakers away from rear seat passenger ears. We picked up my 2025 XLT last week and my kids immediately complained about the speakers in their ears so I just faded to the front.

Could post a picture of where you mounted these? If you mounted them where I think you did, no wonder your kids complained! LoL

Seriously though, where did you mount them?

re-read the post, he's asking how he should mount them. the kids hate the OEM speakers.

@GatorBite there are a number of threads on rear seat boxes, primarily under but I've seen some kickers stuffed behind as well. You can search the forum or just look at the "similar threads" at the bottom of the page and keep doing that until you find the threads with the info you need

CurtisB,

I haven't installed them but I'm considering it. Old school single-cab Ford Rangers had a similar problem with small speakers mounted near your ears. I rode in a few that had 6x9s in boxes behind the seat (factory stereo and aftermarket stereos). Not ideal by audio snob specifications but definitely made lemonade out of those lemons. I'm just looking for feedback from anyone who's already tried it in a Maverick.

leave it faded front and use the volume knob. if it's sufficiently loud there are no issues with rear seat passengers hearing music.

if you want better sound for everyone, installing an amp and replacing the front door & dash speakers would be a good start. I'm assuming everything will be materially the same as 22-24 upgrades in that regard.

I am thinking along the same line here, I would not go with 6x9's because I have already added a power sub

a lot of 6x9s are >3" deep so there's no feasible place to mount them other than custom pods in the lower rear doors, and I'd just use 6.5 there.

longtime forum members know that I really hate the rear 4 / 4x6 pillar-mounted speakers because they are freeair, they do terrible at midbass, and the location fires directly into the top side of a rear seat passenger's head.

it's a net improvement fading them low and I've been tempted to entirely disconnect them.

To the OP I at one time have had the same thought. I have a pair of boxed 6x9’s that are decent quality (especially compared to the factory ford speakers). Unfortunately the boxes on my speakers are already too thick for behind the rear seat. There are thin boxes available, designed for behind seat scenarios but they are like $80 a piece. When I started to do that math I was going to pay as much or not as I would just replacing the front speakers and they would be infinitely better positioned compared to behind the rear seat. My two cents. I still think about them though which is how I found this thread.

I'm still considering it. Just hoped someone else might have photos/notes/etc. I'm thinking the biggest hurdle is the factory EQ setting for the rears many have mentioned. I don't have any other use for the cable/software so that's a level of effort I hadn't accounted for. If I ever pull the trigger I'll update this post.

I spent last week in SAT and am positive there are other Mavericks there. :)
This doesn't seem like a very active group, but if you don't want to mess with the outlay for the cable etc, you may have luck putting out a call for Forscan help here when you're ready: https://www.mavericktruckclub.com/forum/groups/central-texas-maverick-owners-club.3/
