This is a long story of a small problem I've been trying to solve for months, but I'll try to condense it.
I drive to Amarillo from Dallas on 287 a couple of times a year. It's mostly 4 lane divided, but it's not an interstate so it has lights and 30 mph speed limits when you get to a town every 20-30 minutes. I use Waze because the road is a series of radar traps. The drive tends to make my mind wander and I can sometimes miss the sudden drop in speed limit from 75 to 40 or whatever. I love that Waze gives an alert when you're 10mph over the limit so I can shut it down.
Unfortunately, when I'm running waze in apple carplay in my Maverick my indicated speed in the app is all over the place, jumping up and down every second or two usually 2 or 3 mph up, but also sometimes up to 10 mph faster. I tend to drive 5 over the limit when it's 70 or 75 but when I do now, waze is beeping at me incessantly. This didn't happen on my old 17 Colorado that I used an iphone 12 on, so I was convinced that it was my new iphone 16 plus and started down the rabbit hole of waze forums and apple forums looking for a solution. Months of research and no luck. I found that there was a setting in iphones for "high accuracy gps" that other people had used to solve the problem, but it didn't work for me.
Then I got the maverick recall for the backup camera and took it in. I was the first at my dealership to get it done and they couldn't get the update to "take". So they gave me an Escape loaner for a day. Guess what. In the Escape Waze was freaking spot on. Didn't change a single mph from what was shown on the dash. That finally told me the problem was the Mav. Gave me a different tack to take in my research and I found out that Carplay by default uses the car's gps when connected, wired or wireless. I hadn't even thought that my xlt had a gps receiver, but then remembered that the ford pass app can tell me where I parked so I guess it does after all.
Went for a test drive with waze running on my iphone NOT plugged into the Mav and once again, PERFECT speed indication. I did see somewhere that Forscan has a software switch to make carplay use the phone's gps. Maybe someday I'll find a local who can be bribed by a six-pack of Shiner Bock to flip that switch for me, but for now I'll just use a phone holder and NOT connect to the Maverick.
Guess I didn't condense this very much, but just wanted to put this out there in case anyone else is a Waze nerd like me and has the same problem. If I'm an idiot (fairly likely) and missed an obvious solution please roast me. Wouldn't be the first time. Would also love to hear from Lariat owners with Navigation and 2025 owners to see if they have the same issue.
