Saw this segment on MotorWeek and thought of a few MTC members needing to replace their cracked windshield, etc. I do NOT know if the Mavericks camera(s) will need to be re-calibrated but thought I'd post just in case. And many folks have other vehicles that have high-tech features like automated emergency braking, Lane-keeping/lane-centering assist, etc. I think even the non-360 trim levels have the per-collision and emergency braking safety features, do they utilize a camera?

My current 2009 Rav4 has none of these features, but my Lariat w/Lux Pkg will have all the bells and whistles . I like the idea of these safety features, but I'm now realizing the additional costs some repairs may require. Check out the above video to see how complex it is to re-calibrate the front cameras (specialized equipment, wheel alignment, ?full tank of gas?, etc).

Will this will qualify as my PSA post for 2022? ;) Just kidding, everyone be safe out there.

I just had the windshield replaced on my 2022 XLT due to a large rock ship. Fortunately I only had to pay a $100 deductible, as the bill came to just over $1,000. The camera alignment portion was $275.00.

This doesn't apply to you because you had a deductible, but that camera recalibration takes a $20 OBD2 scanner, a Windows laptop with Forscan, and a 1 minute drive on a road with lane stripes on both sides. Just sharing for anyone else that might wanna save money in the future.

I, for one, would not trust myself, nor anyone else, to perform "self alignment" on something as important as the camera.

And due to liability reasons, I would assume many or most shops would not replace a windshield without performing the alignment.

The shop does nothing outside of initializing the self learn on the truck and driving it exactly like I have described.

On the liability, yes, I assume many shops will require it to limit their liability and also charge you or your insurance company $300 for 5 minutes of work.
