Front bumper question - crash / collision protection?

I see that the front bumper on the Maverick offers virtually no space between it and the front of the truck. How does the front bumper absorb energy if is is hit? Or does it? I thought all bumpers were supposed to be able to absorb at least minor impacts without damaging the body..

I think you're thinking of the five mile an hour bumpers that were mandated in the 70's.
Those bumpers mandated 50 years ago.
The standard called for passenger cars, beginning with model year 1973, to withstand 5 mph front and 2 ½ mph rear impacts against a perpendicular barrier without damage to certain safety-related components such as headlamps and fuel systems.
The mandate was repealed 40 years ago. I don't think they're coming back anytime soon.
The cars were so fugly with those bumpers, they weren't selling.
I certainly wouldn't buy a vehicle with those ugly 🫏 bumpers.

I really liked those big bumpers, you push around alot of stuff with a car, & not damage it. My old cars a 73 & a 75 have those, lots of chrome to polish! With those bumpers a vehicle could take a minor hit without damage, today's vehicles you hit a shopping cart & it's $5000 to fix!

Seems to me the front end of the Maverick is especially vulnerable.
