Front air shutter behavior

Good afternoon.

Very simply, I am wondering if there is a thread (that I couldn't find) or if anyone has knowledge (or a shop manual) that describes the full programming/work modes of the front aero shutters.

I'm also wondering why not use closed front grill with top/side/under scoops to flow air over the coolers.
