I wanted to update the crappy sound system that my hybrid xlt came with without spending alot of money
So I swapped out the front doors and tweeters with a set of PowerBass "drop in" speakers a few weeks ago (see update below) and over the past weekend I mounted a 10 inch Rockville RW10CA powered sub behind the back seat. I am pretty impressed with how it all sounds.
I used two pieces of 1/2 plywood and trimmed the butterfly stock mount to mount the sub to. Both side pieces had to be mounted behind the stock mount or the sub will hit the seat. I tapped the rear speaker wires on both sides and used the sub's high level inputs and the auto on and off feature of the sub. There is no difference in the amount of bass with the seat up or down which I found surprising, though there is a lot of read noise with the rear seat down.
I watches videos and some related posts here to learn how to take the front door panel and rear quarter panels off and how to locate and tap the rear speaker wires.
Cost was about $325 USD or about $500 CAD (due to the exchange rate and some shipping charges).
In Dec 2024 I thought that one of the front Powerbass door speakers had blown. Over the course of a couple of days it started making a intermittent horrible sound, at other times it sounded perfect. To be honest, I'm not sure if water or ice got into the speaker plug or if a piece of ice was lodge some where in or against the speaker frame etc. but it went away and every since the speaker has sounded perfect.
