I'm ready to put some real rubber under my 2022 Maverick XLT FX4. Word on the streets is that a 245/70/17 will fit (barely) without a lift. I'm waffling big time on what tires to get though. My gut keeps telling me to pony up for the Pirelli Scorpion ATR's. They really look like a good on-road tire with reasonable off-road capability. I've also been eyeing Falkens Wildpeaks, GT Radials, and even Thunderers. Any advice to tip the scales to a guy that wants: Aggressive Looks. Good on-road manners. Non-embarrasing off-road capability. Isn't going to break the bank and isn't going to completely destroy my fuel economy. Reality is, I like the look more than actually putting the truck to the test. My 11,000 mile Maverick has seen one off-road encounter with loose Florida sand and did ok in stock trim. Just looking for some advice on how to waste a few bucks on cooler tires. :)

I would go with Falkens or the GtRadials. The falkens are really great. Love em on my Tremor. Gt Radials are cheaper but I have been running their MTs on my work truck, off-road everyday for 4 years on one set one tire is almost bald now and one tire that would have been ran over a concrete pin sticking 5 inches out of the ground while I was loaded heavy in a steep incline. It got a hole nearly any tire made would have as well.

Pirellis are regarded fairly weakly.

GT Radials are on my Radar because "back in the day" I had a set of GT Radial "Turbo Plus" on my AMC Eagle SX4 and they were GREAT tires. I also love the old school look of raised white letters (the GT Radials I'm looking at now are Adventuros). You got me one step closer to new tires, but interested what others think. Are Pirelli's that bad, in your opinion? It's a world class tire by all measures, but you are right that the popular consensus isn't so optimistic. :)

Imo, tires are for capability, not looks. If the stock tires are fine for you, why spend the money?

You're likely looking at $1200-1300 plus the cost for a spare wheel.

I personally am a fan of my Toyo Open Country IIIs, but again if you're not off-road often and need the ruggedness, my recommendation is stick with the OEMs until they are no longer good.

Pirelli makes good tires, no doubt. But Pirelli does not make good off-road tires.

You are ridiculously correct about "need versus want", but as an old man, I just kinda want what I want. LOL! Around $1250 is almost exactly where I am at with EGR fender flares, Supreme suspension 1.5" spacers, and the Pirelli tires. I can knock off about $120 if I go with the GT Radials, or about same price with Toyo's, Falkens, or a few others. You have succeeded in knocking another peg out from the Pirelli's. Thank you for weighing in though! P.S. One of the motivating factors in changing tires, besides making the little guy truck a bit more tough looking, is that the stock 225/65/17's are the exact tire that fits my wifes Dodge Grand Caravan, and it's in need of shoes something vicious! Just seems like a great opportunity to "take one for the team" and help my little truck feel like a big boy. LOL

The Pirellis that come on Mavericks stock arent regarded well for all terrain use that is. Honestly the overall tread capability will be similar with the GT Radial Adventuros. If looking at both I would go by wherever the price lands. Pirelli does have a better All Terrain option than the ATRs aswell. By the way Im currently restoring a Eagle wagon. Its got a newer motor in it from a CJ7. I may build a 4.0 for it though. I also have a T5 I may swap in. So far the interior is painted but its got a long way to go.

Just wanted to say I love my OEM falkens, they have been great. I know they’re quiet and good on fuel economy as well as very good in the winter and light off reading I did when I first got mine. I’m guessing anything is an upgrade since you’re happy with the stock pirelli’s that most have been complaining about šŸ˜‰ and since money doesn’t seem to be an issue (or you would wait until they need replacing) I would consider the weight of the tire to help keep fuel economy up.
Money is always an issue, I ain't rich, but I'd like to get some cool rubber since I have a good home for my stock tires on the wifes Caravan (saves buying new rubber for that rig). A lot of folks seem to be happy with the Falkens, and I like the look of that tire as well... I look forward to posting some pics of the final decision after our road trip to Oklahoma (don't wanna dump 3000k+ miles on a brand new set of rubber! LOL). Thank you for weighing in! :)
