My wife and I just purchased a 2025 Maverick Tremor, and I have to say, I’m thoroughly impressed.

We wasted no time putting it to the test. Living in Apache Junction, Arizona, we’re fortunate to have some rugged trails right in our backyard. We recently took the Tremor up past Tortilla Flat and decided to explore a lesser-known trail. It had about a 15º slope and was littered with loose rock — some of the larger ones were close to a foot in diameter. Definitely not a paved road by any means.

The trail ended up being a dead-end, so I had to do a tight turnaround and then climb back out. I expected a bit of a challenge, but the Tremor handled it like a champ. Despite the terrain, it made the climb on the first attempt with no hesitation. The front skid plate made contact just once on the way down, but nothing serious. I was actually pretty surprised at how composed it stayed over the rocky sections.

One feature I really appreciated was Trail Control — got to test it on a separate hill during the same trip. It worked just fine, keeping a steady crawl without me riding the brake. Super helpful.

Also, something worth mentioning: the 2025 model’s use of the front camera to see over crests is a game-changer. That added visibility made navigating the trail much more confident, especially with some of the blind terrain. It’s one of the smartest features Ford has integrated yet for this kind of driving.

I’ve watched a ton of YouTube reviews on the Maverick Tremor, and honestly, most don’t do it justice. This was the best real-world test I could have asked for. If any of the content creators out there are reading this — please do a proper trail run video with the 2025 Tremor. There’s a lot to show off that’s being overlooked.

Looking forward to exploring more and connecting with fellow Maverick owners!

Front bumper cameras are indeed game-changers. It was a must-have on my Bronco and I'm really glad to see Ford brought it to the Maverick.

Update: Pics & Video from Our Latest Off-Road Trip in the 2025 Maverick Tremor

We went off-roading again, this time south of Apache Junction, spending about 8 hours in the Arizona desert near Florence. I remembered to take some pictures this time, and I also captured a ton of dash cam video. So far, I’ve only rendered one video, but more are coming.

Here’s the route we took:
  • Box Canyon
  • Over to Mineral Mountain Road
  • Then onto the Ajax Mine Trail
  • We stopped for lunch at the top of a hill with a killer view
  • Then continued on Ajax, passed through 5 Points
  • And finished the trail out via Cottonwood Canyon Road
After doing some research later, I found out that Mineral Mountain Road and Ajax Mine Trail are rated Extreme – Level 7. That explained a lot! Tons of rock crawling, tight turns, and some pretty gnarly washouts and ledges. We encountered about 20 Jeeps and Broncos coming the opposite way — I think we surprised a few of them.

Despite the rough terrain, the Maverick Tremor performed like a champ once again. Never got stuck. Took everything in stride. There were plenty of obstacles, but the truck didn’t back down. Even with stock tires and no lift, this thing is truly capable off the beaten path.

Check out the pictures and the video I’ve posted — we had a blast. The Maverick may not be a full-sized off-road beast, but it’s way more than just a soft-roader. I’m seriously impressed with how well it continues to handle these trails.

We’re already planning the next trip, but we might dial it back a bit and stick to some moderate Level 5 trails next time. Gotta let the suspension take a breather now and then!

Really appreciated your review. I Just got a '25 Tremor & want to treat it right. In other messages I see references to "PTU" and to "RDU." I'm a novice. What do these abbreviations stand for??

Since I was uncertain, I took the liberty of entering this into an AI chat, and it responded...

PTU and RDU refer to drivetrain components used in the all-wheel-drive system:
  • PTU – Power Transfer Unit:
This is a small gearbox connected to the transmission that transfers power from the front transaxle to the driveshaft going to the rear of the vehicle. Think of it as the front half of the AWD system.
  • RDU – Rear Drive Unit:
Located at the rear axle, the RDU contains the differential and often an electronically controlled clutch (e.g., by BorgWarner or GKN) that decides when and how much torque to send to the rear wheels. It’s the back half of the AWD system.
Together, the PTU and RDU allow the Maverick to switch between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive automatically based on road conditions and traction needs. The AWD system is generally on-demand, meaning the rear wheels only get power when needed to improve traction.

Great write-up, Michael! Loved hearing how well the Tremor performed out there—sounds like a real-world test that proves its worth. That front camera feature alone sounds like a game-changer. Makes me even more excited to take mine off-road soon!

Love that picture of the driver side rear wheel up in the air:)

The nifty “torque vectoring” RDU sent all the rear torque to the wheel on the ground & none to the elevated wheel I believe. The front wheels received less torque than they would if all 4 wheels were on the ground. At least that is how I understand the special drive train you have:)
