I had been considering replacing my 2008 Ram for a while when my wife and I stopped at a Ford dealer in Arkansas to check out the trucks on the lot. Asked a bunch of questions and, low and behold, a new Maverick shows up on the display area in front of the building. A black XLT EB lux just out of prep. Asked our sales person if it was available, (it was April 1st so I was prepared for a joke) but he said yes and we took it for a test drive. LOVED IT! They offered it at $4k over list, but still WAY below other options. My wife, God bless her, said "what's not to like!?" (she hated the Ram) and we bought that Maverick on the spot! However, I did go through a wish list with the sales person and asked if another one ever came available - Lariat, AWD, Lux, FX off road, 4k tow, and 360 (a must) - let me know.

August 28th, I get a call from the sales person - he has exactly what I wished for, but $5k over list. Without seeing it, we closed the deal, at least I thought we did. The sales manager came back and raised the price to $10k over list! Bottom line: the sales person went to the GM, explained that we had already reached an agreement, and the GM overrode the manager.

On August 29th, the sales person delivered the vehicle to my house (a 1&1/2 hour drive into Oklahoma) with a driver to take him back - no additional charge!

The black XLT had 3,750 miles on it and I sold it to the first person that showed up - for $4k over list - the same amount that car max offered and what I paid, excluding the tax. Could have probably held out for more, but the 80 year old guy knew the Maverick inside and out, even better than I did, and he had been looking for a really long time.

Based upon some of the horror stories posted here, I am

You were smart. I could have bought a nice Lariat for $5000 over sticker but did not pull the trigger- now I will be waiting for months or years!

Then buy something else. The Maverick is a $30k vehicle at the very most. Every dollar past $30k makes the build quality less acceptable. I found the $22.5K XL EB to be a charming vehicle that I enjoyed very much. I am OK with paying my agreed upon price of $29,300 for my Lariat Lux Hybrid. Past that, I can tell you unequivocally that the Maverick is simply not up to par in that price range.

Am I reading this correct that you went from a $4k markup to a $10k markup?

Eh, to each their own...
No, I think he got them to come down from 10 to 5 because he had already made an agreement with the salesman.

NJ Pinelands, you are correct. The sales manager most likely had another buyer lined up and wanted to see if he could squeeze me for more. Thankfully the GM supported the sales person.

(I won't even comment on what I think about the sales managers tactics - it makes me ill.)

I totally disagree. What other pickup is available under 40K? I priced others with a similar build to mine, Ranger came in at about 55K. A butt ugly Santa Cruz starts at about 42K. Mine will be about 38K with all the features I opted for. I still think its a good deal for replacing my 99 Ranger and 12 Escape Hybrid with one vehicle. I don't think fuel prices will stay high, and I can tow, open the moon roof, and not scratch up the cargo bed (SIBL) :)

It's not about it being a truck. It's about the materials and build quality. They're fine for $20-30k. They are not acceptable, IMO, past $30k and are absolutely absurd for $40k. A Santa Cruz, a Ridgeline.. both significantly better in those regards.

Maverick is meant to be a cheap vehicle. That's the point.
