My dealer neglected to leave me with the screws for my front plate holder so I need to get some screws. I'm also going to front mount an EZ pass transponder. Does anyone know the correct length and screw type for this? Otherwise I might be in for a little trial and error. Thanks!

The most usual size for mounting the license plate is #14, 1/4" x 5/8", at least for Ford.

Mounting the EZ-PASS transponder on the front may not be the best idea. EZ-PASS uses license plate reader, if there's no transponder. People do steal license plate from vehicle with the EZ-PASS transponder in plain site. I should know, my front license plate had been stolen and it accumulated more than 80 bucks before I realized what was going on. I had to file a policy report to prove to EZ-PASS that my plate had been stolen. From the date of the policy report, the stolen license plate accumulated an additional 120 bucks of tolls, but I did not have to pay for that.

The vehicle in question also needed new, different license plates from DMW. I think it was around 120 bucks.

So, yeah, the stolen license plate registered with EZ-PASS costed me around 200 bucks, not to mention the running around to get back to normal. All my EZ-PASS transponder are removed from the windshield and place in the glove compartment....

I'm willing to take the risk as I can't imagine someone taking that risk up here with our fairly limited number of tolls. They wouldn't be able to rack up much in the way of tolls without me noticing. That's assuming I didn't notice my front plate was missing first.

how long ago did this happen to you? EZ pass info includes make and car color. AI or even simpler techniques would know that the car is the wrong model or color.

but on top of this is it really worth it to save a few bucks in tolls? if you get caught I have to assume you are royally screwed.

just another thought... wouldn't just putting ANY license plate that isn't yours on the car allow you to evade tolls? in fact, I think this would be the smarter move for the criminal. if the stolen plate didn't have EZpass it would probably take a while for the bill to show up to the actual owner.

My case took place early last year, the license plate was stolen from the Toyota Avalon. Based on my experience with EZ-PASS, the cops and the DMW, nobody cares. It's a problem for the victim. It's a crime that's not worth for investigating/pursuing by either of the agencies.

EZ-Pass doesn't care, they will just bill the registered owner of the license plate, be that with or without the the EZ-Pass tag. Without the tag, the owner will get a higher bill than the actual toll. The cut off date for billing the owner is the date of the police report. Until that date the owner will have to pay the tolls.

The number of tolls in the area does not matter, the system is automated and works without human interaction. The system does not care if the toll bridge is in New York Metropolitan area, or in a rural area. It will know the model, color, etc., of the vehicle, but only cares about the tag and the license plate for billing purposes.

By all means, go ahead and put your tag next to the front license plate. Maybe you're correct and nobody takes your tag....

stealing any plate that isn't yours would be just as easy and it would accomplish the same thing. no need to have a transponder. but in any event, maybe crime is much higher in the areas you frequent. it's pretty low density up here.

Exterior mounting of transponder is unnecessary risk.

if I see you have a transponder inside your vehicle and I steal your plate won't it get charged to your account?

so in any event, I didn't ask for an argument on if a person should use an external transponder.

Yes, it will and to muddy the waters....

If you steal my plate that does not have a transponder, I will get a "Toll Bill" as well. Depending on states, this bill may/may not include administration cost and/or higher toll charge than with the transponder. Most, if not all toll bridges have license plate reader and no gates nowadays, that allows EZ_PASS to do that.

In summary... It really does not mater if one has a transponder, or not, maybe some exceptions in rural areas. Either way, the toll will be charged....

For anyone that cares, at least with my front plate mount kit(installed by dealer) #14, 1" screw seem good.
