I went to my GF's house which is 17.3 miles away in ECO mode. Speeds ranged from 30 to 50 mph with 6 semaphores/stop signs. On the way there I got 69 mpg. On the way back, using the same route, at about the same time I used Normal mode and got 68 mpg. I don't do much freeway driving. I'm wondering, is ECO mode only for higher speeds like 60 mph or more?

A few things i noticed about ECO:

- the regen is more aggressive/slows down your vehicle harder
- acceleration is not as responsive and more gradual
- using cruise control, increases in speed are not as responsive and more gradual

At the end of the day though, I didn't really notice that much difference in MPG between the 2. Normal is ideal for me

ECO is more for energy capture, if you are not going to take advantage of e mode, don't bother with ECO. NOW if you take advantage and use e mode as much as possible, like I, you can blow the heck out of FE. This is one of my secrets to 700mpt. I stay in e mode more then hybrid mode.
I try to e mode every where I can, to be a polite driver.

Same for me …. First full 2 months i owned The truck I only used eco and then never used it and my mileage actually went up 1 lol… I think it has more to do with your driving style versus mode you are in

I thought I was being the best mpg too by using Eco mode everywhere I went including my 1.3 mile trip to Aldies. But just for grins & giggles I decided to test the two modes on the same route of longer distance.
And yes, I noticed the more aggressive braking in Eco mode but it seems the 'energy returned' in normal mode was about the same or more.

I use normal mode on normal roads, and eco mode for winding roads. Don’t see any difference between two modes in mpg
