Purchased the ford accessory tailgate lock and noticed this intelligently designed piece of metal where it should go.
Do I need the tailgate lock anymore? Seems like a waste of money.
I have a 2024 FM Hybrid XLT.

With a power locking tail gate I wasn't to worried about some one trying to steal the actual tail gate. For $40 bucks I would have added it to the build and had the dealer do it IMO. In some cases depending on were you live and how you use your truck it might be a good idea to have the lock.

If you're concerned about tailgate theft enough to get a lock then you should expect such a thief to come prepared with a Torx wrench. Take the OEM bracket off and install the lock band. Then order a spare key for it. (LOL) BTW, the Mav uses Torx PLUS fasteners so you may need to get some TP bits like these.

I would put a tamper proof torx bolt in it. Not likely a thief would carry that. They would just move on.
But with a locking tailgate I wouldn't sweat it either way.
Deterrence is the key.

Tailgate theft is a big problem, in all places, Hermosillo, where the Maverick is produced. Many Canadians and Americans go down to Bahia Kino or San Carlos with impressive big quad cab rigs and so forth to tow their campers and toys. Those same folks also head to Hermosillo because it has a Costco, Sams Clubs, big Walmarts and Home Depots. Over the years I heard many a tale of tailgates being stolen on those shopping trips.

Thieves are often opportunists... They are just looking for the quick easy steal. The $40 lock is a decent enough security measure.

I live in L.A. Had my battery and tail lights stolen off past cars, not to mention gasoline. Liberal county D.A. encourages such crimes. Installed the tailgate lock and plan to cage my cat as soon as I can get to it. My message was meant to say that any criminal who plans to steal your tailgate probably has his own Maverick with a dented one. He will come bearing a Torx wrench to fit that bolt. Perhaps the easy fix is a hardened button-head security bolt with the pin in the center. Of course, you may never know if he tries and fails, only if he succeeds or does a lot of damage in the attempt.
