So if I bought it already, and the dealership doesn't own it, then do I own it?
Has anyone bought a dealer vehicle, "in transit", before they've taken delivery?

Mine shipped on 1/8 and was delivered yesterday to my dealer in Asheboro, NC. The estimate in the tracker all along was 2/15, so it was “early”, if you consider taking 4.5 weeks to make it from Mexico to NC “early.”

Sorry it’s taking so long. This part of the wait has been far more brutal than the wait to get built was, IMHO. Mine didn’t get to my dealer in time for them to PDI it and install the cap yesterday, so I’m waiting until Monday to get it, but they’re bringing it to me (I’m an hour from there) and these last two days are SO much easier than those other 4.5 weeks were.

So did your ship from Mexico on 1/18 or ship from Winston-Salem on 1/8

Ok. So the truck I bought, which is not delivered to dealer yet. Has been sitting since Jan 31 in Winston Salem, at the rail yard.
It was supposed to be delivered the first week, then delivered this Monday 2/14, now it's pushed another week to 2/21.
It's being delivered to southern west Virginia, then they will drive it here to me, in NC.

Is this normal? And can the dealer go get it and bring it here?

I've sold my truck to make room for this, now Ive gotta bum a ride for a week, and hope it's not delayed again.
A quote from my sales person: "We have been given authorization to retrieve our own vehicles from the depot/junction points points when they arrive there, so if any delay occurs we can hopefully expedite getting it here once hits the ground locally." So that sounds like your dealer could pick up the truck from the rail yard. My truck is supposed to arrive 2/22- 2/28 by rail. Good luck!

Mine shipped from Mexico on 1/8. I have no idea any of the details once it left the plant until it arrived on 2/11 at the dealer.

My experience at Wixom assembly was once it went through the mousetrap (name given at plant) vehicle is the dealers. Mousetrap reads bar codes on vehicle. At this point dealer is paying for the inventory. Plus is responsible for any repairs.

It's probaly a union thing. Certain car haulers deliver. If dealer can swing it, that would be great. Can't get a yes or no with out asking.
It’s definitely a union car hauler thing and definitely a no.

I just don't understand, if it's sold, not just a dealer order truck to BE sold. It cannot be picked up. Makes no sense to me.
Please keep in mind that any information you receive from the dealership is questionable. It really doesn't matter to them when your Maverick is delivered. Goal #1 is to get your money, not to provide anything beyond the necessary. They have better things to do with their time such as working the next customer.

Not unless you bought it directly from Ford and they are shipping it to you under something like FOB origen (or shipping point) terms. Which isn't what happened.

When you say you "bought it already," you probably mean (at most) that you made a contract with the dealer that (1) obligates them to deliver to you a truck matching certain specifications, and (2) obligates you to pay them for it when they do (through trade-in, financing, cash, whatever).

The dealer, on the other hand, has ongoing contractual relations with Ford such that (1) the dealer can order trucks from Ford, (2) Ford can ship trucks to the dealer, and (3) the dealer has to pay Ford for them at some point. You don't have a purchase contract with Ford.

I don't personally know when ownership of the truck passes to the dealer. Given that Ford collects the destination charge, the terms are more likely to be something closer to FOB destination than FOB shipping point. But ownership doesn't pass to you until the dealer delivers it to you.

Dealer does not own it until its on the ground and signed for. He can refuse it at delivery for defect . If they won't sign for it it goes back to ford.
Ok you win. What I witnessed happening wasn't actually happening.

Maybe I imagined hearing from the factory people performing this process.

Oh and F150 assembley in Dbn happens the same way, I imagined.

As an edit the Wixom plant was torn down many years ago. I've been retired for a while. Maybe processes change.

The answer is no. I even work for the dealership and couldn't. Even my GM couldn't. They have to bring it to you. 🤷

The answer is NO you cannot pick up a truck at the Depot.

You have not bought the truck. You ordered it not bought it.
The truck is owned by the dealership not you.

You will own it when you pay for it at the dealership.

Yes this I know now.
Lol. Came in a few days after post.
And actually I didn't order it, I bought it mid delivery, the dealer self ordered it.

I can see liability issues, pushback from delivery truckers, no personnel to handle the delivery.
