I ordered an XLT but like the look of the 18” standard wheels on the Lariat, and I’m wondering what they’d look like with a gloss or matte black finish…

Most DIY jobs I’ve seen look like exactly like DIY jobs (hideous). That said, it must be possible to do it right and get a high quality finish that lasts.

Anybody have knowledge or experience?

You could try the kits from Dip Your Car but like you said the results will vary and probably depend on how good you are at applying it.

easiest solution is to probably find a good powdercoater. I’ve always had good results with having wheels powder coated and the amount of colors and finishes now is crazy

Pay the money for powder coating.

You're better off just buying the new wheels, then selling the original ones on eBay. Then you know for sure it won't look like crap.
