Ford I guess bought patents from Aisin? I watched video on youtube and fords unit looks identical to the Aisin one. Seemed like a straight out steal by Ford. Unless they bought a patent or patent was no longer good.

Ford and Toyota, who's the parent of Aisin, had a deal on licensing hybrid powertrain patents since the early 2000's which went into the Hybrid Escape with its Aisin transaxle pretty much identical to the modern HF45. Supposedly there was some convergent design and while most articles of the time have Toyota being the one doing most of the knowledge sharing there were some Ford patents that they gained the use of as well (not exclusively hybrid-related).
