I don't think this is quite the arrangement in the mav hybrid. See: low voltage starter.

Ford has been making and selling Hybrids since 2005.

Yeah, I'd suspect this patent is more for covering engineering technologies in models like Explorer Hybrid and F-150 Powerboost.

Doesnā€™t sound like the Maverick setup. Both Ford and Toyota no longer stack the engine and transmission in series.
The sideways mountings of front wheel power train just ran out of space side to side.
Likely a place holder patent. There is a fore seen value in the ā€˜standardā€™ engine arrangement for more powerful engine/transmission needs.

Further, the Maverickā€˜s HF45 is a direct descendent of the HF10 which got itā€™s start back in the 2005 model year, long before the patent the OP posted.

The video @huunvubu posted shows the progression from the HF10, to the HF20, and the HF35. There were no radical changes from generation to generation, just slight refinements. Overall, the architecture is nearly identical 18 years later - just more efficient and refined.

Due to both Ford and Toyota coming up with nearly the same 2 electric motor with planetary gear solutions, they decided to cooperate and not fight it out. Toyota started to copy the nested more compact Ford way a few years before that Ford patient. Likely an agreement with the exactly linear way Toyota started.
