The F100 unibody was a failure as a work truck. On farm trucks the beds wore out before the trucks wore out.

A big window uni commands a good price nowadays when you can find one for sale.

Ford has been selling utes in Australia for decades. They have it figured out.

I always loved these 64, 65 Rancheros but never owned one. Not yet.

My brother had a '64 Ranchero back in the day. I always liked the Ranchero, came close a couple of times but never owned one.

I've had a '62 Ford Ranchero - a uni-body utiity vehicle - for 10 years now. The original payload limit was probably 500 lbs (it was originally a small 6-cylinder engine/light duty axle housing). It's been updated with a heavier-duty axle housing, leaf springs and shocks, but 1,000 lbs is still about the most I would put in the bed, and that would be with plywood to distribute that load over the entire bed.

I attribute the increased chassis payload to improved materials science.

Thanks
Bob

I owned a '61 F100 Unibody 20 or so years ago. No idea the payload as I didn't haul with it. It was a nice clean truck but I didn't have the money to spend on it like I wanted... I sold it to family for $3k

Not the old school examples but my buddy drove a 2010 ridgeline until recently and that thing was good stuff. I was ready to buy it off him when he was upgrading to a full size and a few months prior to it he got t-boned. Shitty for him - they didn't total it either.

The 61-63 F100 uni was still a body on frame truck. It's payload was 1000lbs and towing was 5000lbs. One of the main reasons they returned to normal beds late 63 model was due to doors popping open due to body twisting when frame flexed. 60+ Falcon Ranchero is the closest comparison.

The 60 ranchero had a load capacity of 800#.

F100s of the era were @ 1000# but as work trucks that was typically exceeded.

As I remember even in the 70's, where I lived, trucks were only in peoples driveways if they had a camper top or a camp trailer to pull.

Its not a Ford, but a friend had a rusted-out Subaru BRAT that I got to drive often in college (many many decades ago). That thing was scary as you could see the road passing by through holes in the floor, brakes were poor...and the steering was even worse!

And the reversed bed seats' mountings had even more rust. When riding back there if he turned quickly those seats swayed inches.

But it was fun, you thought you were immortal and just laughed it off.

I had a 1964 F100 with 292 V8 which was a change in chassis and the worst mpg ever. They should have kept the 289 for it. My cousin had 1964 Ranchero and loved it.
