This might sound absurd, but has anyone painted their tri-fold or roll-up black tonneau cover white to keep the heat from building up too high in the summer months; just thinking about what the very high temperature will do to my tool batteries and other sensitive items by leaving them in the bed.
If so, any ideas on whether vinyl, canvas, or other hard roll up cover material will lend itself to being painted. And yes, I have the Oxford White paint on my Maverick.
Thanks for any "constructive" input.

Any flexure of a painted will eventually crack over time. Maybe a trifold hard cover and only paint the hard surface. The main reason most are black is reflection into the cab.

where do you keep your batteries now, if in the passenger compartment the sun shining through the windows is probably worse than a black tonneau on your bed.

Not at all absurd! Yeah, why aren't tonneau covers offered in other colors besides black? I'm sure there are owners who might like the cover to match their paint. While I would stay away from painting it, you might want to look into having it powder coated.

I've checked around and seems powdercoating is usually used on metals and has to go into a 400°F oven~~~~ so that would eliminate that option. Thanks anyway. Anyone else have a reasonable idea on how to get a black canvas tonneau to either white or light gray to help prevent heat buildup? I know about parking in the shade 😎, but that isn't always an option 😄

I suppose 400º might melt the plastic and/or rubber seals, so powder coating is out. The cover itself can get pretty hot, but is that your concern or is it what's stored in the bed? I haven't noticed anything in the bed getting overheated.

Rechargeable batteries in tools getting to hot and affecting lifespan expectancy; tubes of caulk, aerosol paint cans, etc~~~things like that that I don't want to have to remove daily. Not so much the temperature of the cover, just heat buildup in the bed

Ya, I see the problem, now. Have you considered putting those items in cooler chest? Even without ice, I wonder if that would help.
